WASCO, Calif. — October 31, 2026. The City of Wasco has launched an accessory dwelling unit (ADU) permit-ready program to help homeowners explore adding a second residence to eligible properties.
A July 23, 2026 city announcement promotes free permit-ready plans intended to reduce the expense and complexity of preparing a standard ADU design.
What does ‘permit-ready’ mean?
An ADU can be a small separate residence on a lot with a primary home. A predesigned plan may help streamline review, but it is not blanket approval to build anywhere in the city. A property may require site-specific grading, utilities, setbacks, fire access, structural review and permit fees.
Free plans do not mean free construction, free permits or automatic approval. Homeowners should ask which preapproved layouts fit their lot and which modifications require additional engineering.
Why the initiative matters
In a community where housing choices and household costs affect families, ADUs can provide additional living space for relatives or potential rental housing. Their feasibility depends on actual site conditions, financing and regulations.
The city directs residents to its official permit and building information at cityofwasco.org. Its public contact number is 661-758-7214. Confirm current program availability with the responsible building department.
